Cumaru, scientifically known as Dipteryx odorata, is a revered plant medicine widely utilised in various forms such as teas and other herbal preparations. Often referred to as Tonka bean, also known as Brazilian Vanilla, Cumaru is not only prized for its medicinal properties but also for its pleasant aroma and flavour. In the context of Rapé, Cumaru plays a crucial role in enhancing the strength and grounding qualities of the blend.

Paricá (often spelled Parika) refers to the ash used in this Rapé blend, and it is known for its potent effects on the respiratory system. The use of ashes like Paricá or Xixa is a common practice among Amazonian tribes, as they help to balance and enhance the effects of other ingredients in Rapé. This particular blend is designed not only to clear the sinuses and benefit the respiratory system but also to strengthen mental energies, offering a deep physical and spiritual healing experience.

The Katukina tribe, renowned for their mastery in forest medicine, prepares some of the most exquisite and powerful Rapé varieties available. Their Cumaru blend is particularly strong, characterised by a dark, sandy color and a captivating aroma that is both earthy and subtly sweet. Upon application, the blend's intensity is immediately felt, at large doses often inducing purging, sneezing, and tears—hallmarks of a deep cleansing process. After the initial intensity subsides, users typically experience a profound sense of relaxation and mental clarity that can last for hours. Due to its potent effects, it is recommended to be seated during application.

This Rapé is crafted with organic Moi Tabaco (Nicotiana rustica), a type of Tabaco highly regarded by indigenous peoples for its spiritual significance and grounding properties. The Katukina's use of Moi Tabaco gives their Rapé a unique and distinctive aroma, setting it apart from those produced by other ethnic groups. The inclusion of Paricá ash (also known as Xixa) further enhances the blend, adding a layer of depth and grounding that is highly valued in spiritual practices. The ash from these specific trees is particularly esteemed for its ability to amplify the effects of Rapé, making it a crucial component of the blend.

The Katukina, along with other tribes such as the Huni Kuin and Yawanawa, were pioneers in introducing these sacred forest medicines to urban areas, sparking a cultural revival that began in the early 2000s. They have played a significant role in popularising both Kambo (frog medicine) and Rapé on a global scale. Today, the Katukina are still considered as masters of these sacred medicines, and their Rapé has evolved into a refined and sophisticated preparation that is highly respected by practitioners around the world.

This particular Rapé blend is best used in focused ritual settings, where its powerful effects can be fully experienced and integrated. Its intense onset helps to clear mental distractions, grounding the user and leaving them in a state of profound tranquility and clarity.

We take great care to reprocess all received stock to ensure the finest quality powder. Often, Rapé arrives with varying levels of fineness due to the lack of professional sieves used by the tribe. To address this, we meticulously sieve all powders to remove rough bits and particles, resulting in an exceptionally smooth and effective powder at 150-micron fineness. We use laboratory-grade sieves and dehydrating equipment to achieve this quality. This is our standard because it provides the best Rapé experience.

A wonderful and detailed article about the Katukina and our connection with them, can be found here.

Katukina or Catuquina, Katokina, Katukena, Katukino are generic terms that are attributed to five linguistically distinct but geographically proximate indigenous groups that live in southwestern Brazil at the border of the Amazonas and Acre. The Katukina are a tribe that is very connected to the usage of sacred plants. They consider themselves as the first tribe to receive the Kambo medicine straight from the frog. They still carry a vast knowledge about plants and the spirit of the world. Their Rapé is strong and deep, and it carries the wild and powerful spirit of the jungle.
