Katukina Cumaru Paricá – Deep Grounding and Cleansing Strength

Function and Composition

Katukina Cumaru is a deeply cleansing and forceful Rapé crafted by the widow and family of the late Chief Fernando Katukina. This powerful blend is made with organic Moi Tabaco (Nicotiana rustica), ashes from the Cumaru tree (Dipteryx odorata), and Paricá ash (also known as Xixa), each selected for their energetic intensity and traditional ceremonial value. The result is a dark, sandy-coloured Rapé with a robust aroma and a full-bodied energetic presence. It is a potent blend that demands respect—best used in quiet, focused ritual space.

Energetic and Ceremonial Effects

The onset of this Rapé is immediate and strong. When administered in full ceremonial doses, it often triggers sneezing, tearing, or even purging—responses associated with deep energetic and physical cleansing. As the intensity settles, a profound stillness and sense of clarity arise. The combination of Cumaru and Paricá strengthens the connection between body and spirit, clears emotional congestion, and re-establishes a feeling of inner alignment. This is a blend to be approached with humility, and preferably seated during use.

Moi Tabaco

Moi Tabaco provides the spiritual and grounding backbone of this blend. Grown and prepared in the Upper Juruá region using traditional fermentation and sun-drying methods, Moi is favoured by the Katukina for its smooth aroma, deep energy, and ceremonial consistency. Compared to more forceful varieties like Sabia or Arapiraca, Moi offers a grounded, earthy clarity that allows the other elements—Cumaru and Paricá—to expand fully. Cumaru

Cumaru (Dipteryx odorata), also known as Tonka Bean or Brazilian Vanilla, is revered in Amazonian medicine for its aromatic richness and subtle strength. The ashes of the Cumaru tree are used in this blend to enhance its grounding quality and impart a delicate sweetness to the nose and breath. Known to stimulate deep energetic release, Cumaru ashes bring balance, relaxation, and a sense of restored harmony after the blend’s initial impact. Paricá Ashes (Xixa)

Paricá, or Xixa, is a potent ash used by many tribes for its clearing and sharpening effects—especially on the respiratory and energetic systems. It helps to expand the breath, release tension, and amplify the absorption of Tabaco in the nasal passages. In this blend, it intensifies the initial effects while helping the user reconnect to a centred, structured awareness. Paricá ash is known for carrying a bright, activating presence that harmonises with the earthier tones of Cumaru and Moi. To read a comprehensive article on the Paricá ashes, click here.

Tribal and Cultural Context

This Rapé is one of many offerings prepared by the family of Chief Fernando Katukina, who introduced us to the Katukina’s sacred medicines many years ago. Through Fernando’s teachings and guidance, we developed a relationship that continues to this day with his wife and community. The Katukina have long been recognised for their leadership in the ceremonial use of both Rapé and Kambo, and they were instrumental in bringing these traditions into broader public awareness during the early 2000s. Their blends are deeply grounded in ritual, combining ancient knowledge with a high level of preparation and precision. Katukina Rapé is not only a tool of healing but an expression of spiritual mastery.

Natural Variation and Care Notes

Each batch of Katukina Rapé is handmade using wild and seasonal ingredients. Differences in aroma, texture, and potency may naturally occur. Katukina Cumaru Paricá is a dense, dry, and dark Rapé that stores best in its original bottle, away from heat and humidity. Due to its intensity, it is best suited for intentional and grounded ritual settings, and should be used with full presence and humility.

Breath Practice

As you sit with this Rapé, let the breath become your guide. Directly upon application, inhale fully (through the mouth only), and say yes to whatever arises. Immediately let the exhale drop, without force or hesitance. Feel the weight of your body. Hold your spine tall. The heart forward. This is a breath of presence. A breath of remembrance, and gratitude.

On the Use of Intentions

As with all Rapé blends, the use of this medicine is best approached with presence and respect. It is not a consumer product, nor a stimulant. It is a sacred tool, meant for intentional use, whether in solitary practice or guided ritual. Please read our article on the subject of Intention and Affirmation.

Setting the Standard for Ultra Fine Rapé

We take great care to reprocess all received stock to ensure the finest quality powder. Often, Rapé arrives with varying levels of fineness due to the lack of professional sieves used by the tribe. To address this, we meticulously sieve all powders to remove rough bits and particles, resulting in an exceptionally smooth and effective powder at 150-micron fineness. We use laboratory-grade sieves and dehydrating equipment to achieve this quality. This is our standard because it provides the best Rapé experience.
