In the Brazilian Amazon this particular extensive family of trees is referred to as Canela or Caneleiro. Canela is the Portuguese word for Cinnamon. The leaves are thus called “Folha de Canela” or in English Cinnamon leaf. They make a light flavoured very nice aromatic tea that reminds of Cinnamon. Also the bark can be used for tea and is also sometimes used to for its flavour in different preparations, even in Rapé. More information can be found below.

In Brazil there are a great variety of trees that have popular names with canela, Canela Amarela, Canela Preta, Canela de Velho and so on, many are sub species of the same genus but some are completely different. For instance Canela de Velho is a name used for distinct trees in different parts of the country, the one is used to make ash for Rapé is of the family of these leafs while there is another Canela de Velho from the North East of Brazil that is praised for its medicinal properties but is very different. The Ecuadorian Ocotea family of trees has about 200 sub varieties and is related. It is also known for its Cinnamon like flavour and medicinal qualities. It has recently been used to produce essential oil. In fact, this genus of the tree is related to the cinnamon plant and contains trace amounts of cinnamaldehyde, a powerful antioxidant. It is also said to be related to the Lauraceae family, to which common Laurel belongs.

The tea is known to be good for the stomach as an anti-inflammatory. It also lowers the blood pressure and has a gentle calming effect. According to some people it can help to regulate blood sugar and eliminate free radicals.
