A Katukina Forest Preparation

This Rapé is one of several preparations obtained directly through our longstanding relationship with the Katukina community.

Our cooperation originally developed through the late Chief Fernando, who served as our principal contact for these traditional preparations. Following his passing, we have continued working directly with his wife, who maintains this relationship and helps us bring forward a selection of authentic, handcrafted Katukina Rapés.

Some of these blends follow familiar tribal formulas, while others highlight specific trees, ashes and Tabaco preparations from the surrounding forest. Katukina Samaúma is a relatively simple but powerful combination of Samaúma ashes and Sabiá Corda Tabaco.

Sabiá Corda Tabaco

The Tabaco foundation consists of Sabiá prepared in the traditional corda, or rope, form. This type of Tabaco is rolled and cured into dense ropes, developing a concentrated and generally more forceful character than softer regional Tabacos.

Sabiá Corda provides the blend with its depth, firmness and physical presence. It anchors the lighter mineral qualities of the Samaúma ashes and gives the Rapé sufficient force to be felt throughout the body.

Although Katukina Samaúma may initially appear calm or understated, the strength of its Sabiá foundation can become increasingly apparent as the experience develops. Samaúma: Mother of the Forest

Samaúma, botanically known as Ceiba pentandra, is one of the most imposing trees of the Amazon rainforest. Rising far above the surrounding canopy, mature Samaúma trees can be seen from great distances and provide shelter and habitat for many forms of forest life.

Across different Amazonian cultures, the Samaúma is known by names such as the Mother of Trees, Queen of the Forest, Tree of Life and Ladder of Heaven. These names reflect both its extraordinary physical stature and its symbolic role as a connection between the earth below and the sky above.

Its immense buttress roots spread outward across the forest floor, while its trunk and crown rise high above the neighbouring vegetation. This combination has made the tree a natural symbol of grounding, expansion, protection and communication between different levels of existence.

Traditional Meaning of Samaúma Ashes

Within Amazonian spiritual traditions, large and ancient Samaúma trees are sometimes regarded as homes or gathering places for forest spirits. They may be approached as guardians of the surrounding land and as witnesses to generations of human, animal and plant life.

The ashes used in Rapé are associated with this protective and stabilising character. Rather than producing a highly aromatic or immediately stimulating preparation, Samaúma ashes tend to contribute structure, calmness and a deep sense of physical grounding.

Some traditions describe Samaúma symbolically as connecting higher awareness with the centre of the body. This is sometimes expressed through chakra language, particularly through associations with the crown and umbilical centres. Grounding, Calmness and Physical Presence

Katukina Samaúma has a predominantly body-oriented character. Its mental effects are generally subtle, bringing a quiet form of clarity rather than a sharp or highly activating change in perception.

The experience may begin with the direct strength of the Sabiá Corda, followed by a gradual settling through the chest, abdomen and lower body. Many users describe it as calming, stabilising and capable of drawing attention away from excessive mental activity and back towards physical presence.

Its grounding quality may help create a sense of containment during moments of emotional or energetic intensity. Rather than pushing the experience outward, it tends to bring awareness inward and downward, supporting stillness, composure and reconnection with the body.

Cleansing and Release

Some users experience Katukina Samaúma as physically cleansing. Increased salivation, nasal discharge or the release of mucus may occur, particularly when the Rapé is applied in a stronger dosage.

A mild urge to purge is also possible, although this blend is generally less forcefully purgative than some heavier or more aggressive tribal preparations. These reactions vary considerably between individuals and should not be interpreted as guaranteed effects.

Its apparent calmness should not be mistaken for weakness. For inexperienced users, the combination of Samaúma ashes and potent Sabiá Corda can still feel intense, particularly when applied generously or through a forceful administration.

Traditional Ethnobotanical Context

Samaúma also has a place within the broader ethnobotanical traditions of the Amazon. Different parts of the tree have historically been used in regional folk practices, including preparations associated with urinary flow and women’s reproductive care.

These traditional uses form part of the cultural history of the tree but should not be confused with established medical benefits of Samaúma Rapé. The use of ashes in this preparation is primarily connected with its ceremonial, structural and experiential qualities.

Preparation and Respect for the Forest

The Katukina prepare this Rapé by carefully processing the Samaúma ashes into a very fine powder and combining them with Sabiá Corda Tabaco.

According to the information provided with this preparation, the wood used for the ashes is collected responsibly, including material from fallen branches where possible. This allows the tree to be approached with respect while preserving the strength and character associated with Samaúma.

The simplicity of the recipe places considerable importance on the quality of both ingredients. There are no aromatic plants or cooling additions to disguise the foundation: the character comes directly from the relationship between the strong Tabaco and the ashes of this monumental forest tree.

Natural Batch Variation

Rapé is traditionally prepared by hand using naturally grown and gathered materials. Variations in the Sabiá Corda Tabaco, the Samaúma wood, the burning process and the final proportions may cause differences between batches.

Colour, texture, aroma, strength and overall effect can therefore vary slightly. These differences are a natural characteristic of authentic small-batch Rapé and form part of the living character of each preparation.

Breath Practice

As you sit with this Rapé, let the breath become your guide. Directly upon application, inhale fully (through the mouth only), and say yes to whatever arises. Immediately let the exhale drop, without force or hesitance. Feel the weight of your body. Hold your spine tall. The heart forward. This is a breath of presence. A breath of remembrance, and gratitude.

Setting the Standard for Ultra Fine Rapé

We take great care to reprocess all received stock to ensure the finest quality powder. Often, Rapé arrives with varying levels of fineness due to the lack of professional sieves used by the tribe. To address this, we meticulously sieve all powders to remove rough bits and particles, resulting in an exceptionally smooth and effective powder at 150-micron fineness. We use laboratory-grade sieves and dehydrating equipment to achieve this quality. This is our standard because it provides the best Rapé experience.
