Tibetan Prayer Flags - Textile

Medium from Nepal (SKU 5750)

This set of ten traditional Tibetan prayer flags comes wrapped with an information sheet explaining their cultural and spiritual meaning. The practice originates from the Bon tradition and uses five elemental colours to restore balance to body, mind and environment. Blue represents sky, white air, red fire, green water and yellow earth. The printed prayers are believed to be carried by the wind, spreading peace and goodwill to all beings. As they fade, the flags symbolise impermanence and are respectfully renewed. Suitable for hanging indoors or outdoors with clear and generous intention. Detailed information can be found below.

Dimensions: 10 flags measuring 12 x 18 cm. Length of bunting: 180 cm.

Traditional Tibetan Prayer Flags – Elemental Colours with Sacred Text

These authentic Tibetan prayer flags are handmade in Nepal using thin, open-weave cotton and traditional woodblock printing methods. Each flag is printed with sacred Mantras, prayers and protective symbols that are deeply rooted in the ancient Bon tradition, which predates Buddhism and continues to influence Tibetan spiritual practices today.

Prayer flags are not merely decorative. They serve a sacred purpose: transmitting positive energy, blessings and intentions across the land. The Tibetan term for prayer flags is Dar Cho, where Dar means to increase life, fortune, health and wealth, and Cho means for all sentient beings. As the wind passes over the flags, it activates the printed mantras and carries their energy outward, believed to bring peace, harmony and compassion to all it touches. The writing often includes powerful invocations like the Om Mani Padme Hum mantra, prayers for protection, and requests for health and prosperity for all beings, not just the person who hangs them.

The five colours of the flags represent the elements that make up all life, each carrying symbolic power:

- Blue represents the sky and space, promoting openness and clarity of mind.
- White represents air and wind, associated with breath, movement and healing.
- Red represents fire, connected to transformation, power and passion.
- Green represents water, linked to compassion, flow and adaptability.
- Yellow represents earth, bringing stability, nourishment and balance.

Hanging all five together is believed to harmonise these elements, both internally within the body and externally in the environment. For this reason, prayer flags are often used in rituals, healing ceremonies, meditation spaces or simply as an offering of goodwill to the world.

Over time, the fabric naturally fades and frays. This is not a flaw, it is part of the intended symbolism. The gradual weathering reflects the impermanence of life and the passing of time. Traditionally, once the flags have served their purpose, they are either respectfully burned to release their blessings to the heavens or replaced with new flags, laid over the old ones as a gesture of renewal.

Prayer flags may be hung indoors to promote spiritual awareness and clarity of intention, or outside (preferably high up) to release their blessings to the wider world. It is important to approach their placement with care and respect. The intention should always be that all beings benefit, rather than for personal gain alone.
