Mucuna, also known as Velvet bean, belongs to the Leguminosae (Pea family). It is an annual climbing vine that grows 3-18 metre in height and is indigenous to tropical regions, ie. Africa, India, and the West Indies. In Brazil the seeds have medicinal uses and it is used in Indian Ayurveda. The seeds are said to enhance the mental function, support normal control of physical movements and strengthen the immune system. More information below.

Mucuna, also known as Velvet bean belongs to the Leguminosae (Pea family). It is an annual climbing vine that grows 3-18 meter in height and is indigenous to tropical regions, especially Africa, India, and the West Indies. Its flowers are white to dark purple and hang in long clusters. The plant also produces clusters of pods which contain seeds known as Mucuna beans. 

In Brazil the seeds have traditionally been used as a medicine. It also has a long history of use in Indian Ayurveda. The seeds are said to be known to enhance the mental function, support normal control of physical movements, and strengthen the immune system. They are also said to enhance the libido and support both the male and female sexual function. For women they may also normalise the menstrual blood flow and support the health of the reproductive organs. The seeds of Mucuna pruriens are high in protein, carbohydrates and minerals. They are also rich in alkaloids and are an important natural source of the very powerful neurotransmitter precursor L-Dopa.
