Clitoria flower tea or blue tea, or butterfly pea flower tea, is a caffeine-free herbal concoction, made by steeping dried or fresh leaves of the Clitoria ternatea plant. The best thing about the blue tea is that it is absolutely caffeine-free, and it is packed with antioxidants. The most striking feature about this plant is the colour of its flowers, a vivid deep blue. The most popular use for this flower is as a natural food and beverage colouring. The tea is popular in Thailand and Vietnam, where it is served post dinner, usually with lemon and honey added to it. Adding lemon juice to the tea changes the pH of the drink, making it change colour from deep blue to purple. A mere 3 flowers is sufficient for one mug of tea.

The flowers of this vine have the shape of human female genitalia, hence the Latin name of the genus, Clitoria. As indicated by its Latin name, the Blue Butterfly Pea Vine originated from Ternate island and has spread across Southeast Asia and other continents.

Clitoria ternatea, commonly known as Asian Pigeonwings, Bluebellvine, Blue Pea, Butterfly pea, Cordofan Pea and Darwin Pea, is a plant species belonging to the Fabaceae family native to South East Asia. It is a perennial herbaceous plant, with elliptic, obtuse leaves. It grows as a vine or creeper, doing well in moist, neutral soil.

Over consumption of the tea may cause nausea and diarrhea. Pregnant and lactating women are also advised against consumption of the tea, unless consulted with their doctor.
